Charlie's Gardens
_
Charlie’s Gardens is the name for our 501c3 based program
that is dedicated to Charles E Nichols (father of our board president). The program is designed to assist those
returning servicemen (and wives of those deployed), veterans and local area
seniors who see the value in owning and maintaining their own (organic) garden.
SOS believes that having access to ones own replenishing supply of fresh vegetables (and fruits and more) is becoming more critically important from a health, cost and especially from a preparedness perspective.
And for those of you that haven’t tasted a truly ripe fruit or vegetable that got that way “through nature” your taste buds are in for a real treat. Here’s why…
Unlike the grocery store varieties that must be picked way early and artificially ripened (yes even organic) those that are grown with care in the sunshine with just the right amount of water and nutrients and picked on the day they should be picked taste “so much” better and are that much better for you too!
We are fortunate to have both the experience and the relationships and the know how to construct, amend and feed a garden that is economical at any level but gets even more so as the yields and growing area increase.
And what we are looking for are ideal “garden partners”. A garden partner is one who is genuinely passionate and committed about maintaining a garden on a daily basis.
He or she may only have a small area or one that could feed multiple people in addition to those that tend the garden. As long as there is water and at least 2 people able and committed to the daily effort an amazing amount of nutrient rich produce can be grown.
The goals are of the program are twofold:
First, to provide an enjoyable, social, healthy daily event with the end result being nutrient rich freshly grown food available to those that participate. And the really interesting part is the more you do, the more is produced including the level of benefit…a truly sustainable activity and program by definition.
For those of you that have some experience and perhaps a larger residential or even small commercial area to dedicate to a small “production” garden there is definitely a business opportunity growing fruits and vegetables for your friends and neighbors…and they’ll thank you for it too!
We have multiple choices/ways to make it happen and even scale it, once we have identified a few core people interested on this level. And FYI, some of this growing can optionally be done indoors as well.
It must be pointed out that to really grow this program (pun intended ;-) to it's maximum capability we really can use some financial help as any 501c3 does these days. The difference with us is 100% of your tax deductible donation will into the Charlie’s Garden program to pay for construction and soil amendment expenses, oversight through the growing season and expand the garden awareness effort.
And if you would like to sponsor a specific garden, at your location or one of your choosing, please contact us for time to talk about your specific wishes.
Thank you for supporting SOS and Charlie’s Gardens...many will benefit assisted by your kindness and commitment.
